    Hewlett Fucking Packard
New ScanJet 4370, would expect it to be XP compatible, and indeed its drivers kinda are - 150dpi previews work fine, nothing else works in the scanner & camera wizard.

The fucking stupid arse installer for the applications however, is NOT. It appears to be trying to install 64 bit .net assemblies because my computer is 64 bit compatible - but I'm using 32 bit XP. HP's response - download new software. 246MB of it.

    Twats.

    Out the door finally
Is 0.40.1 of OpenTTD for BeOS/BONE. A net_server version will definately follow "soon" - theres no porting barriers, other than will and time. Get it while its tepid (it was released over a month ago on other platforms...) here: http://www.bebits.com/app/3810

    Argh. Argh. Fucking Argh.
right, this is the closest I'm ever going to come to a stereotypical LiveJournal angry/angsty teen post. I'm under 20 and listening to a dodgy nu-metal CD that seems to be almost solely about suicide, so that gets me past the entry requirements, I guess

(Edit: for some reason, theres a Muse track on the CD, with lyrics "Won't let you smother it, won't let you buy it". All too damn apt for what we did let happen to F1)

Today, Formula One died. Well, its not actually gone yet, but its as dead to me as can be. I've been repressing this one for 5 months now.

I supported Jordan (http://www.f1jordan.com) from their foundation in 1991 until January 2005. The day they were sold was the day their soul died.

I'm not religious (I have No Religion. Not atheist, just No Religion), I'm not even spiritual. However, I definately think that an entity can have a soul. BeOS definately has a soul, driven by the OS, its developers, and the user base. The football team I support, Brighton and Hove Albion, has a soul; mainly from the fans pulling it through the (extremely damn) hard times in the mid 1990's.

However, Jordan had far more of a soul than any of this. Jordan wasn't an F1 team. It wasn't even a lifestyle. It was part of my life, and part of the lives of many, many other people. The company cared for the fans, the fans cared for the company. At GP's, the PR people would randomly dig out Irish fans for pit passes, party entrance, etc. All of this turned a GP (which is actually pretty boring if the atmosphere is bad) into a huge event, a family event also.

Jordan got into you like it was a member of your family, or at least an extremely close friend. For a fair while, I ran a Jordan fans site (not fansite...), which I had to hand over for time reasons. It eventually spawned http://www.jordanfansonline.com , pretty much the only officially recognised fans site, and mentioned in the official club magazine. Oh, the magazine was another thing about it being part of you...

Jordan, in their heydey, did a lot more than F1. You wore Jordan - full clothes range. You drank Jordan - they made energy drinks. You read Jordan - books, magazines, etc. And so on. Damn, I'm starting to wander here...

Anyway, another reason Jordan had such a special meaning to me was that it was IRISH. In the early 1990's, after the buzz of Italia '90, having our own F1 team, especially from 93-95 when they ran with an IRISH driver. When you supported them, you had the country with you.

Jordan did excellently for a new team in 1991. And then terribly in 1992. And pretty much the entire time they were competitive after that was a struggle - do well for a while, then drop again. Loads of second places that could have been first. Losing good drivers for lack of cash. Cars being punted off the track when doing well. But then we had Spa 98.

    Spa 98

Sorry, just have to repeat that again

    Spa 98

If you have any idea what I'm talking about, no more explanation is needed

    Then Italy and France 99.

    Then nothing.

Suddenly, theres a lot less supporters around. But theres still a buzz. Theres still massive post-race parties. Theres still random acts of insanity like impromptu concerts with EJ on drums. Theres little in the way of results on track, and serious financial/driver/engine issues. But the team still has a SOUL

Brazil 2003. A fluke, but my fuck it was amazing.

And then we hit January 2005. The team is sold. To a Russian. Who's moving it, changing race licence nationality and name. And theres nothing the fans can do about it - its a done deal, its prepared, its finito. We're fucked.

It feels like part of myself has been ripped from me. The team thats, to quote New Order "you took my time and you took my money", isn't the team I supported anyway. Theres not going to be any parties at races; theres going to be no more tours of the facility after Silverstone; theres going to be no more blagging your way into the pits because you've got an Irish accent and yellow hair. No more nail biting weekends, no more Brazil 2003-like weeks of anguish. Nothing. Its gone. Its dead.

I resign from JFO, fuck all that I've done there in the past few years anyway. I still wear my Jordan stuff on occasion, but I've not touched any of the Jordan Toyota gear, or anything with new sponsors on it. My hair is still yellow, because I've grown extremely used to it like that. I ignore 'Midland' for a while. And then we hit today, where Midland race as one of the three teams on the circuit at Indy.

    Eddie wouldn't have raced.

    Current Mood: angry
    Current Music: Linkin Park, tbh...

    ouch, Ouch, OUCH
The entire left side of my body - from the muscles in my arse cheek across the base of my back and up to my shoulder on the left side - is killing me today. Dunno whats causing it. Could be some sort of weird RSI problm, but I've never suffered from that in my 14 years of computer usage.

    Linkin Park Guilt
I like Linkin Park - their music is good, and they don't seem to be too up their own arses, unlike most other bands of that genre

I however do NOT like their fans. There was someone ranting on the Wikipedia because they were classified as nu-metal, and another moaning that they're compared to Korn. Yet more annoyance from their fans that they did a collabaration with Jay-Z, because he's "commercial".

And then you get people wibbling on about how "emotionally attached" they are to the songs, mainly crap about how it stopped them topping themselves, etc. What I used to call the "Nirvana Complex"....

    FOR FUCKS SAKE STOP WHINGING!!!

I know a few other people who like the band but wouldn't generally admit it, because their main bloc of fans are such arrogant tosspots. I think the band aren't helping this image, and its probably hurting their concert ticket sales, if not even their album sales - I wouldn't be seen dead buying a Linkin Park CD in Dublin due to the stereotype.

They're slated to be touring Europe some time soon. I'd like to go see them, but I doubt I'd fit in...

    Screw you, Sony...
I need to Windows back on my Vaio. I have no CD drive or Floppy drive, as anyone whos read this before will know

I do however have DOS and a free 19GB partition on it

So I boot to DOS, and CD to the 19GB partition to which I've copied Windows 2000. Run winnt.exe, it extracts and copies the files. Reboot. Bootman still stares me in the face - Windows didn't write an MBR.

So I RIS load Windows 2000. This should nuke my HDD, but my BeOS partition is still almost virginal so nothing much to lose. RIS refuses to run as Windows 2000 doesn't support my Intel NIC.

So I RIS load Windows 2003. I can't find XP. This only nukes Windows supported partitions. And EXT2, because it doesn't like Linux. So my BeOS is safe.

Files copied, reboot. No bootman! However, its a "Disk Error" message.

I netboot DOS, run loadbeos.com, get back into BeOS, reinstall bootman and point at Windows. Nothing, dead, no boot sector.

My BIOS appears to actively repel Windows versions that are not signed by Sony. I can't RIS load my Sony XP as the fucker is ENCRYPTED on disk. Bastards

My next laptop is an IBM.

    iBook, Smartphone, RTE
iBook arrived 8 days ago. OSX good but overly shiny, YDL 4 as shipped not like machine (no sound, no sleep, no graphics acceleration.

YDL kernel update gave me sound, sleep, 2D AND 3D acceleration. OSX still overly shiny, but at least it has some good apps to make up for it

My new smartphone is charging at the moment - Nokia 6670. Got it free (legally) minus the battery, so a £8.64 PowerMart cloner battery is in it now.

RTE said they wanted me to appear on their science show. Now they don't. If they change their minds again I think I'll appear and try to make a mockery of the entire thing.

    Overfunded bastards.

    iBook and YDL
iBook ordered Thursday, YDL ordered Thursday. Apple factory 200 miles from house, YDL pressing plant 4,000 miles from house. YDL arrived today. No iBook.

I couldn't remember *WHY* I hated Apple. Now I do.

    John Peel RIP
John Peel has died, age 65. Great man, great DJ. Great loss to the music industry.

I've got his Orbital last-gig-ever from earlier this year recorded here somewhere - going to dig it out now and listen to it.

    Banned from YT
Today I got banned from YT's forums for criticising their CVO, who has libelled me in the past. Ah well

Ironically enough, it was a YT employee who checked my Terminal patches into CVS today...
    3:29 am
    haxor, haxor, haxor
After a number of hours of hacking, Haikus Terminal now has an R5-esque Help menu, of which at least two and probably three parts are working. Window size selection and font selection now work for sure, and the latter also gets the info from a settings file right, finally. Charsets *probably* work but I can't really test them, being an Anglophile and nothing else.

    My head hurts now.

    Ports, ports, ports
Gave the BeOS world two more Linux ports this morning - gocr 0.39 and nmap 3.55. Well, nmap had been sitting, ported on my HDD since August...

Going to look at OpenSSH later on, would be nice to have a recent ssh/scp/etc for BONE.

    Argh, fscking boot.local
Just spent all night working around a wonky boot.local on a server... I HATE Linux

    MediaWiki
Finally got PHP 4.3.9, MySQL 4.1.5, Apache 2.0.52 and MediaWiki 1.3.5 to work together, from source, on SuSE 8.1 Professional (DoF's Linux-server-of-choice, weirdly). However, I'm now highly insane. Had to recompile PHP FIVE TIMES to get it to play with Apache and MySQL the right way.

    Fscking Fireworks
Theres been fireworks/bangers going off ALL EVENING today. And its only the eleventh. And the damn things are illegal in Ireland anyway.

Starting to get driven insane by them - can here them through my headphones.

    Dell Cockup
Just had to order new power adapters for my Latituden - all 3 of them. All three adapters are from a faulty set of batches (4,400,000 is a bloody big batch...). Now, if only they'd recall the batteries (they're starting to die of old age now).

    NDA
I've got to fax an NDA over to the States tommorrow. Its a bit scary almost, signing away my rights to talk about what I'm coding on....

    Wikipedia
I went on an insane Wikipedia rush today. I think I got 6 new articles in, mainly to do with Irish TV, and heavily rewrote the one on The Den.

Even though its GNU licence I'm contributing willingly... weird...

    Back on net_server
For some reason, I cannot authenticate from BeOS BONE with Firefox or Mozilla. Weird.

However, I'm now posting this from BeOS with Mozilla. Authenticated fine, no problems. Very weird.

So it seems I'm stuck on net_server. The wireless and wired network cards on this baby (Vaio) work on pure R5 but not well/at all on BONE.

Odd that I'm using a 2002 laptop in 2004 with an OS mastered in 2000 and a browser designed for 1999, with no problems...
